Calling All Artists!

Calling All Artists!

You’ve been waiting for weeks, and now the official announcement can be made: The Interstitial Arts Foundation is holding another auction to benefit the Interfictions anthologies.  Yes, that is plural, because Interfictions 2 will be out this winter.  The auction will coincide with the publication of the book, allowing us to create an artistic celebration and event for a book that does not exist in the world yet.  I know, awesome, right?

The IAF is looking for amazing artists, crafters, musicians and people who love to create to donate portable/wearable/singable art and music based on the stories in Interfictions 1 and 2. Yes, 2!

But how, you ask, will we base creations on that which we have not read?  Excellent question!

If you visit the IAFAuction Call to Artists you will see short excerpts from stories in Interfictions 2 floating around the page.  Read them, flip through them (there are about 30 in all), find one that grabs you, inspires you, makes you want to read more.  Then scroll down the page and fill out the participant form.  There you can tell us about you and your art, tell us which story you like, and request that we send it to you.

Yes, that’s right.  Participating artists get to read one story from the anthology long before it comes out.  All you have to do is promise to donate the art or music you create based on that story to the auction. (Artists who participated in last year’s auction get a special surprise — email me!)

You can also base your art/music on fiction from the original anthology (available in fine bookstores and as a Kindle download).

See the website for more details and to ask questions.  If you are not inclined to participate, please help us spread the word!  We’d love to get submissions from artists and musicians of every kind, interstitial or not.

Altered Fluid, The Blog!

Altered Fluid, The Blog!

Those of you who visit my main site may have noticed a new addition on the sidebar a few weeks ago — the RSS feed from the Altered Fluid blog.  Altered Fluid is one of my writing groups here in NYC, and we’re a damn talented bunch of people.  On our mailing list we often have very… interesting… conversations.  So we thought a group blog would be appropriate.

I think folks who read me would find things my fellow Fluidians have to say entertaining and interesting.  Especially Mr. Trimarco, as he always blows me away with his insights.  So add us to bookmarks or feed readers or LJ f-lists!

Show creators, tired of the crazy wing of your fanbase? Here’s how to get rid of them.

Show creators, tired of the crazy wing of your fanbase? Here's how to get rid of them.

I bet that if producers/writers knew that this was a quick and easy way to put crazy fangirls off of their fandom they would have done it a long time ago.

So there’s this show called Supernatural. I don’t watch it but I do know that it’s about two brothers who investigate supernatural goings on. I also know that the actors who play these brothers are hotties.  And the show has a pretty intense fanbase. That was the extent of my knowledge until recently.

Since I don’t watch this show, I was unaware until a little bit ago that a lot of the fanfic written for it is slash between the two brothers. Yes. Slash. In the fandom it’s called Wincest because their last names are Winchester.

Yes, you read right.

Anyway, over on Fandom Wank there’s a very amusing entry about a recent episode in which the brothers discover that there’s some fangirl out there writing novels based on their adventures (within the world of the show).  They also find out that there are people online writing stories about them. When they go to look they find a lot of Wincest.  A lot.

After this episode aired, apparently the fandom became extremely not happy. They didn’t like the depiction of fangirls (as crazy, crazy people who are crazy) and they particularly didn’t like the brothers refering to incest slash as “sick”.

I’m going to pause a moment and let that sink in.

The fandom is upset because the characters they love (and the writers who create them) are not down with incest.

Yeah.

Anyway, seems many fangirls are saying they are so hurt and betrayed and etc. that they will stop watching and other such mumblings.  I have to say, that was a really effective way to drive a certain segment of the fandom away, Supernatural writers. Kudos if that was your goal.

I am perhaps being overly harsh and on a high horse. But this fandom is vying with the Twilight and Harry Potter fandoms for amounts of intense foolishness. Just a few days ago Delux pointed me to a Supernatural fan post where these girls were serving up some serious haterade because they went to an autographing session for one of the brothers and were appalled and angry that his girlfriend dared to be there! She harshed their fansquee!  How dare she bring them all down by reminding them that he has sex with someone who is not them? Read it — you must understand the depths of entitlement and freakitude.

I’m sure many other TV shows have fandoms with completely inappropriate people like this. Now you know how to quell them! Go forth and write some episode wherein characters decide that incest is wrong and you will stomp on the hearts of non-balanced slashers everywhere.

(I should add here that I have no particular issue with fandom in general. I am a fandom, I have participated in fandoms, I enjoy fanfic sometimes, I love that people can love a show or book or movie or whatever so much that inspires them to do all sorts of cool stuff. But the rantings above are for times whe Fandom Goes Wrong.)

It Must Be Nice

It Must Be Nice

To have a job where your fannish/SF/online life is not a detriment, but an enhancement of your professional standing. Or, it must be nice not to have a damn job at all, and thus say whatever crazy shit comes to mind whenever one wants.

It’s always great to hear from people who have nothing to lose chide people who have to walk a fine line every day of their lives about how they should be and do.

I’m so disgusted right now that I can’t even form a properly snarky post. You people ought to be ashamed of yourselves.

ETA: the first link used to go to a blog post by Kathryn Cramer, but she redirected the URL.  Classy!  Now it just links to her About page.  To understand why I linked to her with those words, I offer an excerpt from the post titled “I Am Appalled”:

“Kathryn Cramer has been linking my LJ to my full name on wikis and in other people’s blog comments ”

[coffeeandink’s full name] owes me an apology. Anyone interested in what I might have actually done to give such overblown offense should look HERE and HERE. […]

(I’ve seen strange tactics for protecting one’s Internet handle before, but I’m quite nonplussed at the tactic of flaming people who have actually acquiesced to requests for concealment of identity. What was she thinking?!?)

[…]

Can I just say, for the record, that I think it is wildly unethical to flame, under a fake name that you refuse to associate with your real name and history, your former boss and people you formerly worked with at a company, especially like claiming to take the moral high ground on an issue like, say, race. I am appalled, just really appalled, & even more appalled by people who think this is a legitimate use of an alias. It is not.

Google cache here, for now.

One of these things is not like the other

One of these things is not like the other

At Comicon this weekend there was a special “last minute” appearance by Daniel Dae Kim who plays Jin on Lost.  I am assuming it was kept under wraps to avoid prematurely leaking that Jin was returning to the show even though he got all blowed up.  Before his autograph session the press folks got a chance to ask him some questions.  I was one of those press folk :)

Because some of the press people were going to the Dollhouse panel and others were doing short video interviews, it ended up that my small group didn’t get a chance to talk to him until the last 20 minutes (which was plenty of time).  When he sat down with us he jokingly said, “You must have had all of your questions answered by now!”  Honestly, I was surprised people had any more to ask him about Lost.  They badgered the poor guy for 40 minutes and tried to trick him into revealing something OMG!important or whatever.

I asked a non-Lost question and, when I told him I was doing so, he smiled appreciatively.  I mean, yes, he was there to talk about Lost.  But man, people could NOT let up about the same stuff over and over again.  You get a chance to meet one of these actors and you know they cannot tell you secrets, so why not, instead, try to open it up and talk about wider stuff?

Am I being bitchy?

Anyway, this all resulted in the interview I have up on Fantasy today.  It’s pretty cool, if I say so myself.  And my first foray into creating a narrative out of an interview.  I mainly did this because my questions are rambly and thus not worth preserving in the Q&A format.

Oh, and also: that dude is pretty hot as well as being really intelligent and just all-around impressive.  I’m really glad I got a chance to meet him.

My Love For TNG Makes This Funnier

Because we spent a good chunk of time talking about Star Trek on Hour of the Wolf, Leah/seaya send me these videos, which I have arranged in a convenient playlist for you. NSFW not just due to some… visual stuff, but also because you will laugh so hard that your boss will totally know you are goofing off.

The first one isn’t great but, in context, is useful. Just watch them all…

…I need some TNG icons.
