WikiSurfing!
WikiSurfing — don’t know if that’s an actual term, but that’s what I call it when I look up one thing on Wikipedia that leads me to another, another, and another until it’s 4 hours later. I was wikisurfing a character from Star Trek when I ended up at the page for a classic Trek episode: Assignment: Earth. According to the entry, this was meant to be a pseudo-pilot for a new show (of the same name). It would be about the adventures of Gary Seven, “an Earth human from a far more advanced world. His ancestors are humans taken from Earth over 6,000 years ago and trained to intercede on Earth to help it survive.”
Gary utilizes some very advanced technology, like long-range transporters, talking computers, and a “servo” pen that does whatever he wants it to do when he points it at a person or thing.
It was the servo pen that pinged it for me.
Having not seen the episode itself, maybe my perception is skewed a bit. But it sounds to me like this was meant to be the American answer to Doctor Who. (I did note that the wiki article actually compares him to James Bond, and it could be that he has more similarities there.) It never became its own show, though.
Perhaps this is the fangirl in me, but I think it would have been more awesome, back then, to have the Doctor run into the crew of the Enterprise. I’m sure this has been done to death in fanfiction. Still, I can dream.
That Time Of Year Again…
The time of year when a girl’s fancy turns to finding more interns.
This semester I had three awesome interns who are full of interny goodness. I get to keep two of them, but I’d like a few more, including one who can do marketing stuff. Today I finally got my permanent computer at work so I am able to arrange my deskspace how I want it to be forever. I’ve avoided personalizing my space until I was sure where everything was going to be.
So, how should I decorate my space? I’ve never had a cubicle before. What’s essential?

I can’t stop crying
I remember hearing him speak for the first time at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. I remember what everyone said at the time: That man is going to be our first black president. I remember when this election cycle started (way too damn early) and people created a movement to recruit Obama and encourage him to run. I remember thinking it would be some nice practice for him, to get in the game and maybe do a primay or two. I remember thinking, as it became clear that this wasn’t just going to be a passing fancy, that he could not win because he’s black. I remember bracing myself for the wave of stupid that was sure to accompany this campaign. I remember a growing sense that maybe maybe maybe this could actually happen. I emember waking up one day and realizing that I wanted it badly. I didn’t just want it to not be McCain or any other Republican, I wanted it to be Obama. I remember hearing it said over and over on the television, that he had won, and not registering it right away. Because I just knew that it would be weeks and weeks. But it really happened. Really really. It’s done.

Go See Some Theatre
If you live in or near NY, then you should definitely check out the steampunk production of Twelfth Night going on right now. I wrote it up for Fantasy Magazine earlier this week. There are pictures, go see! Though they don’t do the design complete justice.
They’re using a quote from my write up on the production’s web page, and I can’t tell you how much that makes me squee. I’ve had that happen to me a couple of times when writing formal reviews. Once for SheFinds, once for TheFix, and now for Fantasy. It gives me a little bit of lift to know that my words are worthy of pull quotes.
Seeing the play also renewed my enthusiasm for the YA novel I wrote and am revising based on the story. I’m about to attempt a major overhaul as I make the book part 1 of a trilogy. Scarier words have never been spoken!
